Once again more Hollywood couples have succumbed to the temptations of infidelity. So what do their statements say about them?
Kristen – ‘I’m deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I’ve caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardised the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I’m so sorry.’
Kristen’s first line is ‘the’ standard line for infidelity. It’s empty. Statements generally are contrived, impersonal and lack feeling and sincerity and emotion. However, she is focusing on how others feel and not on herself, which is a positive thing. The only personal thing here is that she’s mentioned her partner by name and her last sentence does show some remorse.
But as with all infidelity, is it remorse at what she’s done, or remorse that she has been found out?
She has played down the affair and is keen to mention that it was a ‘momentary indiscretion’, to imply that this was an impulsive affair and there were no feelings involved. Her use of the word ‘jeopardise’ means she is fully aware of the value of her partner and what was at stake here. In my opinion, although contrived, Kristen’s is the more heartfelt statement as she accepts responsibility for her actions, unlike Rupert….
Rupert – ‘I am utterly distraught about the pain I have caused my family. My beautiful wife and heavenly children are all I have in this world. I love them with all my heart. I am praying that we can get through this together.’
Rupert’s statement is equally contrived, but the opposite of Kristen’s. He’s made no attempt at downplaying the affair. His choice of words is very interesting. It’s about how he feels. ‘I am utterly distraught.’ To say ‘My beautiful wife and heavenly children are all I have in this world’ he is attempting to say he can’t live without them.
It’s a selfish statement about him – there’s an element of making his wife feel guilty and pressured into accepting his apology/infidelity. He’s suggesting he’s nothing without them. By saying ‘I am praying that we can get through this together’, he’s putting the responsibility on Liberty Ross, his wife, for whether she chooses to keep the marriage/family together, and not accepting fault for the break up, if it does happen. If his wife and family meant that much to him he wouldn’t have cheated. I doubt his sincerity.
The statements offer no bearing on whether they will recover from this infidelity. It’s impossible to tell. In my opinion if you have to read a statement that has been written with probably the help of an agent, it isn’t truly from the heart. Only time will tell if their relationships are strong enough to get through this. Once the trust is gone it is very difficult to rebuild, and often trust can never be 100% regained.
In my opinion based on these statements Kristen’s relationship has more of a chance of recovery than Rupert’s, however I’m not sure that Rob will be able to forgive.
