How to open a relationship
Is It Right for You?
Exploring the concept of how to open a relationship can be an appealing option to those who are nonconformist and find the restrictions of monogamy unfulfilling.
As more couples find themselves intrigued by non-monogamous relationship styles such as polyamory, swinging and throuples, it’s important to consider whether these arrangements to open your relationship align with your values, needs, and emotional capacity.
During my decade as a sex worker, I spent intimate time with various couples and individuals in open relationships. While none-monogamy works for some couples it certainly doesn’t work for all and the subject should be broached with sensitivity and care to a respective partner. I would recommend taking some time to fully digest and process all the implications of an open relationship rather than making any impulsive decisions. Due diligence and exploring all the ‘what if’ scenarios is prudent.
If you’re contemplating ‘opening up’ your relationship, a relationship coach, such as myself, can provide the guidance you need to navigate this complex process and help you consider the dynamics of such a relationship including setting firm boundaries and ensuring both parties meet each other’s individual needs.
Open Relationship Considerations.
- Assess Your Motivations
Before venturing into an open relationship, it’s essential to reflect on your reasons. Are you seeking personal growth, greater intimacy, or a way to address unmet needs? Avoid using an open relationship to fix deeper issues like mistrust or dissatisfaction, as these require a solid foundation of communication and mutual respect.
- Establish Clear Boundaries
Setting boundaries is crucial in maintaining a healthy dynamic. Discuss what behaviours are acceptable, whether that’s emotional involvement, physical intimacy, or time spent with others. Regular check-ins can help ensure both partners feel secure and respected.
- Communicate Honestly and Often
Open relationships thrive on honest communication. Share your feelings, fears, and expectations openly with your partner. Addressing jealousy or insecurity early can prevent misunderstandings and resentment from taking root.
- Seek Professional Guidance
Navigating the intricacies of an open relationship can be daunting. Working with a relationship coach experienced in non-traditional dynamics can help you build the communication skills and emotional resilience needed for success. A coach can also help you identify and address any underlying issues before they become barriers.
Open relationships aren’t for everyone, but with the right considerations and support, they can be rewarding, exciting and deepen trust and intimacy. If you’re curious about this relationship style and are looking for guidance let’s jump on a call to explore how I can help.
